The track was certified Gold by the RIAA on February 5, 1973 for one million copies sold. This track, a pre release single from the 1973 album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, became John's first U. S. #1 hit. It hit the top of the charts or the top 10 in many other countries as well. By 1995 the single had been certified Platinum.
